Help! I Can't Sell This manuscript: Revisioning and Rewriting the Picture Book
Between the end of the first draft and the trip to the bank to deposit your advance check lies a lot of work. It begins with a critical look at the story in order to determine its commercial vitality and viability. Linda’s session show you what to look for, how to judge your manuscript objectively, the questions to ask yourself, and the process of making the story as strong as it can be.

Open to: any participant who attends Fall Conference on Saturday, October 2. Prepublished authors will be given preference. If space permits, published writers may attend.

The Writer's Studio: A Symposium for Aspiring Authors
In the first hour of this writing workshop we’ll identify the top ten weaknesses in book manuscripts for children and young adults. The importance of manuscript critique will be discussed, as well the differences between and expectations of critique groups, agents, and editors. The remaining workshop time will be spent critiquing partial manuscripts in a group setting. Sunday Studio participants will have submitted five pages of a work-in-progress, along with an optional one-page synopsis of their book. Submissions will be copied and distributed to everyone in advance. Each participant is expected to have read and critiqued all submissions prior to the workshop. Participants will receive oral comments during the day, as well as written comments to take home. In wrap-up, aspiring authors will be given strategies for tackling manuscript revisions. Come prepared and rested. Critique sessions are intense.

Instructions for workshop attendees:
The Sunday Studio with Julie Anne Peters is intended for writers of young adult, middle grade, and chapter book fiction and nonfiction. Registrants for the Studio will be contacted by the instructor with specifics on how to format and submit pages for critique. Participants will be limited to five (5) manuscript pages plus an optional one-page synopsis. NOTE: Manuscripts must be received by September 4 to allow time for participants to read and critique all submissions.

Open to: 15 participants who attend Fall Conference on Saturday, October 2. Prepublished authors will be given preference. If space permits, published writers may attend.

The Tortoise and the Hare: The Importance of Pacing in Picture Books for Children
Using their own picture book texts and 32-page book maps, participants will learn to identify areas of their texts needing revision, expansion, or abbreviation.

Instructions for workshop attendees: Bring one complete draft of a picture book text in progress for reference.

This workshop will address the typical reasons why your manuscript may receive this response from an editor. It will include examples of well developed works from various genres and discussion of strategies for strengthening weak elements. Ideally, participants should give some thought to identifying areas of strength and weakness within their writing prior to the workshop.

In this interactive workshop, Ronnie is open to discussing the following possible topics:
  • Her background and how she came to be in the business
  • What the business is like and how the whole operation works
  • What a typical day is like
  • How she chooses her artists--what grabs her attention
  • Do mailing gimmicks work?
  • Visual examples of portfolios she loved and some she hated and why
  • What makes an illustrator saleable?
  • What is the best way to approach agents or publishing houses?
  • Sample contracts
  • Realistic ideas about the incomes that illustrators can expect at various stages of their careers
  • Suggestions on business practices for the illustrator at home
  • Trends she sees in the industry
  • Computers: does she see more computer-generated art, or is it passing?
  • How computer literate do we have to be?
  • Do those ads in source books work? Which ones?
