Three Exercises That Help You Grab and Hold On to Your Reader
Publishers get too many submissions, and most cannot give full readings to everything. Readers have too many books in front of them in the bookstore or library, and they cannot read everything, either. So you have to grab right away, or you won't get that editor, or that reader.

The development of voice in children’s books and how it is used differently in various formats (picture books, middle grade, YA, etc.) Participants will learn the many ways that narrative voice can be used in different children's book formats, and how the use of voice in their own work can help them get the effect they want.

Learn about the unique publishing opportunities that nonfiction presents. Using concrete examples, we'll talk about choosing a focused subject, genre, and approach as well as explore tips for researching your books and creating substantive backmatter. Develop an awareness of different markets and learn what makes for distinctive, award-winning books. Useful for fiction writers, too!

The Rules of Engagement: How to Get (and Keep!) a Reader Involved in Your Novel - Cheryl Klein
The first task of any novel is to get the reader hooked on the characters, world, and story. In this workshop, we’ll look at published examples of engaging voices, premises, and characters and discuss the techniques that make them so successful, with special emphasis on showing vs. telling and avoiding Cheryl’s Top Ten Turnoffs in Novel Submissions.
