8:15 – 9:15 The Basics of Boilerplate – Erin Murphy
Look at a publishing contract, and it's easy to believe it's written in another language. Join agent Erin Murphy as she walks participants through the basic elements of a publishing contract. (She's no attorney, and thus can't give legal advice, but she can share her experience and expertise.)
9:15 – 9:30 Break
For the following sessions, participants select either the Picture Book Workshop with Jennifer Wingertzahn or the Novel Workshop with Susan Burke.
9:30 – 12:00 The Possibilities Encompassed by the Picture Book Format – Jennifer Wingertzahn
In this workshop we'll discuss what makes a strong picture book text and do writing exercises to help develop those qualities in your own work.
Each participant should send a completed picture book text that may (or may not) be distributed and used as an example during the workshop. This will also help Jennifer develop her talk and exercises for the group. You don't have to submit a manuscript to participate, though it is strongly encouraged.
To send in your manuscript, please follow these instructions:
RMC-SCBWI PB Pro Forum
c/o Colin Murcray
7392 S. Vance St.
Littleton , CO 80128
Registration for the Pro Forum will be verified, then manuscripts will be compiled and sent to Jennifer on August 16. If your manuscript doesn't arrive by August 16, it won't be reviewed in advance but you can still participate in the workshop!
Feel free to also bring any rejection letters you've received for your picture book texts, especially for the manuscripts you've submitted for this workshop, which will add to the discussion.
(Breaks to be determined by editor)
9:30 – 12:00 Revise, Rewrite, Recast: The importance of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Drafts for Novel Writers – Susan Burke
This workshop will provide a look at the revision process, featuring concrete examples from the editorial front lines and tips on what to look for when you're revising your own manuscript. This workshop will also incorporate a first page critique (manuscript pages to be chosen randomly), so that participants can identify key components of the revision process in their own work.
To participate in the first page critique, please bring the first page of a novel manuscript, using standard manuscript style and formatting.
(Breaks to be determined by editor)
12:00 – 12:45 Lunch
ARE YOU AN SCBWI ASSOCIATE MEMBER WHO WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND PRO FORUM? As of Tuesday, September 12, we are no longer accepting inquiries from Associate Members. If you are an associate member of SCBWI but would like to be considered for a spot in the Author's Professional Forum, contact Colin Murcray (colin@rmcscbwi.org) or Denise Vega (denise@rmcscbwi.org) AFTER August 15 to find out space availability. If space is available, you will be asked to provide a writing sample and/or proof of win/place in a reputable writing contest for evaluation purposes. Associate members will be notified of Pro Forum entry in a timely manner. Because of the deadlines, associates who are selected to participate in the Pro Forum and want to attend Jennifer Wingertzahn's picture book workshop will be unable to submit a manuscript but can still participate in it. If you are also interested in attending Kathleen Duey's Writing Workshop, we recommend that you register for that until you find out whether you have been accepted into the Author's Pro Forum. If you are accepted, we can switch your registration at that time. |
