Instructions for “First Pages” Manuscript Critique Sessions

Open to: all attendees.
Format: Standard manuscript style -- 1" margins, double-spaced, 12-point font (Courier or Times Roman preferred), white paper.
Information:

  1. At the top of the page, include the TITLE of your manuscript.
  2. Also at the top of the page, include the TYPE OF MANUSCRIPT you are submitting:
    • PICTURE BOOK
    • NOVEL (includes chapter book, middle grade novel, young adult novel, middle grade/early young adult--aka "tween")
  3. You do not need to include your name unless you want to include it.

(see example below)

Length: FIRST PAGE of a manuscript only (up to 250 words) - NO cover page, no second page, even if your page ends in the middle of a sentence (try to format the page so it ends in a complete sentence)
Submissions not following the above requirements cannot be accepted.

Submission procedure: (1) Bring the first page of your manuscript on March 31. (2) Place it in either the PICTURE BOOK basket or the NOVEL basket at the registration table—please do NOT put a page in both baskets; we want to ensure that as many people as possible have a chance to have their page read and critiqued. Thank you!

NOTE: Please understand that depending on the number of submissions, time constraints may prevent the editor from getting to all the manuscripts--but we will do our best!

If you have questions about First Pages, please contact Co-Regional Advisor Colin Murcray.

Instructions for Group Portfolio Review

Open to: all attendees
Format: Portfolios should measure no more than 24" x 32" (the standard large portfolio size) and contain no more than 12 pieces. Only the first three to twelve pieces will be reviewed, depending on the quantity of portfolios. Each piece should be your very best work, presented as neatly as possible. You may also bring take-home pieces.
NOTE: Bring your portfolio with you on March 31. Do not mail it.

If you have questions about the portfolio review, contact Illustrator Coordinator Bobbi Collier-Morales.
