Do you need to have your kitchen spotless before you can sit down to write? Or perhaps answer that one last e-mail? Or maybe you’ve been on vacation or a self-imposed break from your writing and are struggling to get back into it. Join Co-Regional Advisor and author Denise Vega in exploring strategies for getting those words back on paper. Feel free to bring a work or idea you are ready to get back into - we will do a few writing exercises to get those creative juices flowing again.

        
You are invited to attend the first Colorado Springs regional SCBWI workshop!  Come meet other local authors and artists, learn about recent changes in our organization and enjoy some refreshments.  There will be time for questions and getting to know one another.

June 23-25, 2006 Summer Retreat
Franciscan Retreat Center, Colorado Springs, CO
Participants had a fabulous and productive weekend with award-winning author Randy Powell, author of Three Clams and an Oyster, Is Kissing A Girl Who Smokes Like Licking An Ashtray?, Tribute to Another Dead Rock Star. Writers listened to lectures, had lots of free time to work on their novels, and broke into small groups to discuss questions and get feedback. "Sharpening Your Tools of the Trade"

The Spring Workshop provided guidance for authors and illustrators at all levels, covering writing a synopsis, creating suspense, learning to self-promote, conduct an interview, do school visits, and build an effective website. A talented array of speakers shared their tips for success in children's publishing, including Alane Ferguson, Hilari Bell, Claudia Cangilla McAdam, Olgy Gary, Becky Clark Cornwell, Lisa Lodholm Gilman, and children's bookseller Shirley Sternola. Prolific and multi-talented illustrator Dorothy Donahue gave an inspiring and humorous keynote address and provided insights into art techniques as well as school visits for illustrators.

"Critique Fest: Taking Your Work From Good to Wow!"

The Fall Conference provided a wealth of opportunities for writers and illustrators to have their work critiqued, hear how others use feedback to advance their work, and learn common mistakes they should avoid. Our speakers included award-winning author Donna Jo Napoli; editors Yolanda LeRoy (Charlesbridge), Cheryl Klein (Arthur Levine/Scholastic), and Michele Burke (Knopf). Renowned illustrator Wendell Minor led illustrators, along with local illustrators Danlyn Iantorno and Lori Kiplinger Pandy. Also scheduled were authors Claudia Mills, Denise Vega, and Laura Backes, editor of the Children's Book Insider newsletter and write4kids.com.

“What Color is Your Pencil? Building Your Career in Children's Publishing.”
Although your path is unique, you are not alone in your publishing journey -- in the joys, challenges, or frustrations. The Spring Workshop inspired and recharged the authors and illustrators who attended.

Authors and Illustrators - Award-winning author Carol Lynch Williams brought her unique experience to all with her warmth and humor. Dynamic creativity coach Cynthia Morris led interactive exercises to spark both authors and illustrators to break through creative blocks and to set goals.

Other speakers included authors Hilari Bell, Debbie Dadey, Laura Deal, Eugene Gagliano, Carolyn Gard, and panelists Mary Bartek, Kathleen Pelley, Nancy Oswald, Caroline Stutson, and Denise Vega.

Illustrators - Sampled Liquitex, Strathmore Papers, Golden Artist Colors, and Shiva Casein among others and left with a wealth of information from author-illustrator Anna-Maria Crum.

"Voice, Vision, and Vitality: Bringing Children's Literature to Life"
Editors, authors, illustrators, and an artist's agent explored voice with attendees, including how to develop our own, and how to look at our work with new eyes and make it sing. Award-winning author Julie Anne Peters was the keynote speaker, sharing her experience and enthusiasm with us. Other speakers included Cecile Goyette, Senior Editor, Dial Books for Young Readers, Mary Lee Donovan, Executive Editor, Candlewick Press, and authors Linda Arms White and Alane Ferguson. Artist's agent Ronnie Herman of the Herman agency and illustrator Jane Maday led wonderful sessions for illustrators.

July 16-18, 2004 Summer Retreat at the Franciscan Center in Colorado Springs, CO
"Write Now! Seizing the Moment" with Lesléa Newman.
Due to an enthusiastic response to last year's retreat, Lesléa Newman returned to provide more guidance and inspiration. She promised something for everyone-those who were with her last summer, as well as those who will attend for the first time and she delivered.

The retreat balanced lectures and readings with individual writing exercises, working on character development from either a work-in-progress or someone brand new. Writers worked in small groups to help focus and fine-tune the work they'd done individually. 

March 13, 2004  Spring Workshop
"Finding Your Inner Seuss: Humor, Rhyme, and Poetry in Children's Literature"
We had a day of serious fun examining how to incorporate humor, rhyme, and poetry into children's writing and illustrating. Our speakers included Alice Letvin, Editorial Director of Carus Publishing/Cricket Magazine Group, Cricket Art Director Karen Kohn, authors Frank Lloyd Kramer, Linda Ashman, Claudia Mills, Lauren Myracle, Marjorie Blain Parker, Phyllis Perry, and illustrator Eris Klein. Each of the  authors and illustrators shared their knowledge and expertise and also led us through actual writing and illustrating exercises, incorporating poetry, rhyme, and humor into our work.

September 13 & 14, 2003 Fall Conference
"GENRE-IFIC! Finding Your Niche in Genre Markets"

Writers and illustrators received a wealth of information about mysteries, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and nonfiction with Emma Dryden, Editorial Director of Margaret K. McElderry Books; Lisa Findlay, Assistant Editor, Random House; and illustrator Cyd Moore and a host of other talented authors and illustrators.

July 18-20, 2003 Summer Retreat
"Writing the Truth/The Truth About Writing"
It has been said that writers lie in order to tell the truth. What does this mean? As writers, we are concerned with telling the emotional truth of a story, and that can often mean altering the "facts." Writers joined author and creativity coach Lesléa Newman for three days in an idyllic, Colorado setting as she guided them in discovering their personal reservoirs of inspiration. Using simple, structured writing exercises, participants learned how to mold the stuff of their lives into stories that speak their truth. Ms. Newman is the author of Write from the Heart: Inspiration and Exercises for Women Who Want to Write as well as numerous books for adults and children.

2003 Spring Workshop, April 5.
"Children's Educational Publishing: Hidden Treasures, Golden Opportunities"
Executive Editor Jeanine Manfro of McGraw-Hill Children's Publishing kicked off this event, providing many nuggets to writers and illustrators looking to break into this lucrative market. Topics covered were writing workbooks, nonfiction magazine pieces and books, the difference between trade and educational publishing with authors Linda Armstrong, Nancy Bentley, Ellen Javernick, Sean McCollum, Phyllis Perry, Kathleen Phillips, author/illustrator Gary Raham, and Carol Reinsma. Teacher Clare Schoolmaster and librarians Nancy Maday and Bonnie Phinney shared their on-the-job insights. Illustrators received a crash course in what to expect in illustrating for the educational market with Vivian Kerstein, Managing Art Director for Harcourt School Publishers, and illustrators Phyllis Pollema-Cahill and Roberta Collier-Morales.
